I will be the first to say that Im a cheapskate and i dont like to throw things away. If I buy something, I look at it as if I know someday I might sell it. The past week, we sold a bunch of stuff that we could have probably taken with us. But I think part of the joy of moving is to purge and splurge at the new home. The old stuff we had was great! Instead of putting it out on the curb, I always try to sell it. Even its for $5. In fact, I sold the kids picnic table I bought for $20 three years ago for $5.
The items went fairly fast. Kids stuff, furniture, etc. I have a love/hate with Craigslist.
Love:
- Super easy to get rid of anything. Really want it gone, post "Free".
- It reaches 10s of thousands of people.
Hate:
- The flakes and no shows
- The sob stories
- Low ballers
- Multiply people emailing me wanting the same item. Who do I select? Will they show?
Few tips for Craigslist:
- Dont make the ad too wordy. But keep enough info make them want it.
- Put it for $1. Then when they search for items $0-50, your item will be listed first on price if they sort!
- Dont put your phone number in the ad or email.
- If you want $50 for an item, price it $60. The suckers always haggle.
- Offer the carrot.. "If you come today, you can have it for $50" It makes them "think"
We ended up selling our 2006 Saturn Vue as well. It was a great car, just didnt want to take it with us. Went to a family around the corner from us. I tried Craigslist with this car, and not much luck. End up parking it next to the Iron Horse Trail and it sold just from people looking.
Sold the boat on Craigslist as well. It went fast with crazy people low balling me, eventually I guy came by with a stack of cash and BOOM.. it was gone. Now that one, I was pretty sad to see it go. But one day, we will get another one. :)
End of the day purging between cars and boats and rummage sales and Craiglist list $17k. Mamma needs some new furniture.
